As teenage art
students growing up in the early 60’s, my wife-to-be Mary and
myself, like most young people at the time, (and still true today)
“lived” for music. The most important things in our lives were the
next Beatles or Stones single. Indeed, I had my own pop group and
cut half a dozen or so singles with major record companies. I failed
abysmally and in the 70’s I sought my fortunes elsewhere.
You can therefore appreciate that, in 1995 when fellow Bristolian
and international songwriter Roger Cook sent me a tape of the music
he and Les Reed had written for a musical, I was all ears. Of the
numerous hit songs Roger had written during a career that dates back
to the 60s, perhaps he’s best known for songs like the Coca Cola
anthem of the 70’s - I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing
, Crystal
Gale’s signature tune Talking In Your Sleep
and Something’s Gotten
Hold Of My Heart, immortalised by Gene Pitney . Likewise, Les, as
Roger, had over the years written numerous hit songs, including all
time classics such as It’s Not Unusual
and Delilah
for Tom Jones and The Last Waltz
for Engelbert Humperdinck.
