I pressed “play” on the tape Roger sent me and in a nanosecond I was
hooked on what I heard. By the end of the tape I was ready to fund
the show right there and then.
I asked Mary if she would be an “angel” and allow me to raid the
family coffers in aid of my flight of fancy. She brought me down to
earth with a dose of reality by advising me that the shareholders of
the sign supplies distribution company we founded in 1976 would not
take too kindly to the Chairman being sidetracked by a musical.
By 1999 our company had become the biggest of its kind in the world
and we decided to sell it. I approached Mary on the subject of the
musical again. This time she said “Yes”.
Having sold the company, Mary, our son Julian and myself were
effectively “redundant”. Born in 1971, Julian joined the company
when he was 18. At the time we sold it he was responsible for
developing, designing and hosting the company’s global websites.
